Description
The aromatic expression and balance of a Pessac-Leognan red wine
The estate
At the end of the 17th century, Chateau Couhins-Lurton appeared in history, peacefully traversing the centuries thanks to the good care of the Blanchereau family. In 1959, the estate was recognized for the quality of its white wines, entering the INAO (National Institute of origin and quality) classification of Graves Classified Growths. On the other hand, lower quantities of red wines are produced. When, in 1967, André Lurton caught wind of a vine uprooting project on the chateau’s soils, he did not hesitate to rent the plots of the estates in question and, in 1992, he succeeded in acquiring the whole estate. He then embarked on the ambitious project of restoring the chateau’s reputation by putting the spotlight on traditional red grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard
Chateau Couhins-Lurton is a Pessac-Leognan wine from a 21 hectare vineyard, 14 of which are dedicated to red wine. Located in Villenave-d'Ornon, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Graves region and a mild oceanic climate. Chateau Couhins-Lurton 2021 red wine is made from vines that are 26 years old on average, which are rooted in the heights of Martillac, at an altitude of nearly 45 metres. On these soils, which are particularly influenced by clay, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals reveal their powerful and complex expressions. The estate has obtained the High Environmental Value level 3 certificate.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage is marked by an unstable climate, with a strong frost in April, significant mildew pressure and a particularly cool summer. These extreme conditions had an impact of up to 10% on the red wine vineyard. At the end of summer, the wide temperature variations between hot days and cool nights are ideal and helped to develop the ripeness and aromatic palette of the grapes.
Vinification and aging
Following manual harvesting, 20% of the total volume is vinified in different containers: wooden rolls, 500-liter barrels and sandstone amphorae. The vatting is long. Lastly, the wine is aged for 12 months in barrels (50% of which are new).
The blend
Merlot (90%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).
