Description
The elegance and richness of a Pessac-Léognan red wine
The estate
At the end of the 17th century, Château Couhins-Lurton arrived on the scene and passed through the centuries peacefully thanks to the good care of the Blanchereau family. In 1959, the estate was recognised for the quality of its white wines and was included in the INAO classification of Graves Crus Classés. Nevertheless, the quantity of red wines produced was less. In 1967, when André Lurton heard of a project to uproot the vines on the château's land, he did not hesitate to rent the plots of land concerned and in 1992, he managed to acquire the entire estate. He then took on the ambitious plan to restore the château's reputation by giving pride of place to ancestral red grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard
Château Couhins-Lurton is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 21-hectare vineyard, 14 of which are dedicated to red wine. Located in Villenave-d'Ornon, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir in the heart of Graves and a mild oceanic climate. The Château Couhins-Lurton red 2022 is made from vines that are an average of 27 years old, which take root on the heights of the commune of Martillac, at an altitude of nearly 45 metres. On these soils, which are particularly influenced by clay, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon reveal all their power and complexity. The estate has been awarded the High Environmental Value level 3 certificate.
The vintage
A drought led to a slight reduction in yields, due to the lower volume of grapes. The growers can be proud of the great health state of the vineyard, having staggered the harvest over time, thereby reaching perfect ripeness on each plot.
Winemaking and ageing
Harvest from 8 September to 6 October. Full vinification (20% of the total volume) in wooden rolls, 500 litre barrels and sandstone amphorae. Long vatting periods. Finally, the wine was aged for 12 months in barrels (50% of which were new).
Blend
Château Couhins-Lurton Rouge 2022 is a blend of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%).
