Description
The elegance and richness of a Pessac-Léognan red wine
The estate
At the end of the 17th century, the Château Couhins-Lurton emerges from history and peacefully traverses the centuries thanks to the good care of the Blanchereau family. In 1959, the estate is recognized for the quality of its white wines and enters the INAO classification of Crus Classés de Graves. However, the quantity of red wines produced is lesser. When in 1967 André Lurton hears of a vine uprooting project on the castle's lands, he does not hesitate to rent the concerned parcels of the estate and in 1992, he manages to acquire the entirety of the estate. He then undertakes the ambitious project of restoring the castle's nobility by highlighting ancestral red grape varieties such as merlot or cabernet sauvignon.
The vineyard
Château Couhins-Lurton is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 21-hectare vineyard, 14 of which are dedicated to red wine. Located in Villenave-d'Ornon, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir in the heart of Graves and an oceanic climate characterized by its mildness. The Château Couhins-Lurton red 2022 comes from vines averaging 27 years old, which take root on the heights of the town of Martillac, at nearly 45 meters above sea level. On these lands particularly influenced by clay, the merlots and cabernet sauvignons reveal all their power and complexity. The estate is certified High Environmental Value level 3.
The vintage
The drought had an impact on a slight decrease in yields, due to the decrease in grape volume. The vineyard can boast of remarkable sanitary quality, which has favored the spreading of the harvest over time and thus reach optimal maturity for each plot.
Vinification and aging
Harvest from September 8 to October 6. Complete vinification (20% of the total volume) in wooden rolls, 500-liter barrels and stoneware amphorae. The macerations are long. Finally, the wine is aged 12 months in barrels (50% of which are new).
Blend
The Château Couhins-Lurton red 2022 is a blend of merlot (85%) and cabernet sauvignon (15%).
