Description
An authentic Haut-Médoc with hints of Pomerol
The estate
Created in the 18th century under the name Cousran, the Château Coufran adopted its current spelling in 1924 when it was acquired by Louis Miailhe. Located in the Haut-Médoc at Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, this Bordeaux estate covers seventy-six hectares of gravel near the Gironde estuary. A family property for a century, this dynasty of Bordeaux wine merchants has owned the estate since 1924. Coufran’s uniqueness lies in its dominance of merlot, a strategic choice initiated by Louis Miailhe. This distinctive character in the Haut-Médoc earned Château Coufran the nickname “ Pomerol du Médoc ”.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Coufran thrives on an exceptional terroir in the Haut-Médoc, composed of gravel on marl with a clay subsoil. This geological mosaic, located near the Gironde estuary, benefits from a microclimate favorable to grape ripening. The seventy-six hectares of vines, averaging fifty years old, guarantee optimal concentration of aromas.
The wine
The 2024 vintage symbolically marks the centenary of the Miailhe family's leadership of the estate. This special year represents a tribute to one hundred years of know-how and winemaking tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Winemaking and aging
Harvesting, carried out partly by hand and partly mechanically, allows for a rigorous selection of grapes. Winemaking takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aging is carried out over twelve months in French oak barrels.
Blend
The blend of this Château Coufran 2024 consists of 85% merlot and 15% cabernet sauvignon.
