Vinum

Herb-spiced with a distinct smoky note, cool fireplace, cassis, blackberries, a hint of vanilla, cola herb; on the palate fresh, juicy, delicate fruit, pronounced tannins, plenty of energy and tension; a finish of very good length, spicy and red-fruited. A pleasantly elegant Calon Ségur that showcases its terroir beautifully.

Decanter

Super ripe, concentrated aromas on the nose. Plums, cassis, cherries with vanilla and some cinnamon as well as floral scents. Sleek and straight, the signature chalkiness straight away with bright, almost high-toned cranberry fruit. It’s not so wide or broad but really well defined and tapers with liquorice and cola accents on the finish. Feels well made, great tannin finesse, some chewy fruit and a feeling of coolness. 3.60 pH. A yield of 45 hl/ha. 100% new oak.

Quite floral in its nature, the wine quickly reveals its core of cherries and currants in the aromatic profile. Juicy, fresh, and energetic, the wine is medium-bodied, with a bright center of sweet, vibrant, red fruits and black currants on the mid-palate, leading to a mint-accented, soft, lifted finish. The wine blends 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.1% ABV, 3.6 pH. Yields were 45 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place September 23 - October 9. You only need to give it 2 years or so of patience, and it will be a beauty to drink for at least 2 decades with ease. Drink from 2029-2055. 93-95 Pts

From the outset, Calon Ségur underscores its depth and complexity. It reveals a wealth of nuances with great precision. It impresses with its ability to combine maturity and freshness, offering notes of ripe dark berries alongside terroir-driven nuances with chalky tones and a touch of graphite, followed by a varietal hint (eucalyptus). On the palate, the wine shows a serene profile with a quiet strength rarely seen in 2024. It stands above the vintage, like the great wines to which it belongs. Its tannins master austerity brilliantly, alongside the incisive edge of the acidity. The latter brings drive, precision and freshness, welcome in this powerful context. An exceptional wine—energizing, linear and precise—able to channel its vigor with both verve and delicacy. A tremendous success.

Beautiful ruby-red expression. A slimmer, more finessed expression of Calon than in recent years, giving it less of the estate signature than some, but it shows beautiful cassis bud, rose petals, peony, iris, cocoa bean and graphite. Subtle, but with real charm. 3.60 pH. 45 hl/ha. 100% new oak. Vincent Millet, director. Harvest from 23 September to 9 October.

Inky black colour. An intense, refined, pure nose, fruity and silky, evolving in the glass towards floral, liquorice and smoky notes. A magnificent attack on the palate, full-bodied, juicy and silky, then the wine melts away, noble as it unfolds into a great, sapid length, delicately perfumed by a subtle woody base. It’s impossible to spit out! Calon Segur is sailing ever more often close to 90% Cabernet. Unthinkable just a few years ago! Blend: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 13.1% - pH: 3.6. Yield: 45 hl/ha.

Description

The structure and aromatic profile of a wine from Saint-Estèphe

The estate

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank of the Garonne to the other. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate on the occasion of his marriage, added his name, thus giving birth to the label of this Third Classified Growth of Saint-Estèphe.

The Château Calon Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century until 2012, when the estate was acquired by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines in an inimitable style bearing the seal of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become famous for its label adorning the estate’s bottles. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the estate and pays homage to this phrase by the Marquis de Ségur: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon.” For nearly three centuries, enthusiasts of Château Calon Ségur have remained loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.

The vineyard

Château Calon Ségur is set on a vineyard spanning 55 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production. Situated on a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary, with a thin layer of lake-derived clay at the top, the vines, averaging 20 years of age, give birth to a great wine from Saint-Estèphe.

The vintage

The winter of 2023-2024 was mild and rainy. The flowering in June took place in dry and temperate conditions. The summer, slightly cool and with limited water deficit, allowed for serene growth of the vine. In September, sustained rainfall and cool temperatures required heightened vigilance, but the clay soils favored good maturation.

Vinification and aging

Hand harvesting was carried out before an initial on-vine grape inspection. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table. 20-day maceration. Micro-oxygenation. Aging lasts 20 months in new barrels.

Blend

This Château Calon Ségur 2024 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (82%), Merlot (9%), Cabernet Franc (8%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
