Chapelle de Potensac 2019

Production of the 2019 Chapelle de Potensac is down by half, as vineyards deemed to have been planted on unsuitable sites have been ripped up. The result of this draconian selection of the raw materials is a step up in quality. Notes of cherries, sweet berries and forest floor preface a medium to full-bodied, ample and vibrant palate framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently grippy finish.

Clear raspberry leaf notes on the nose here, giving a floral edge that fills out with raspberry fruit on the attack. This is savoury and sappy, accessible but with a kick of tannins through the end of play. Enjoyable second wine.

A linear and tight red with blackberries, blueberries and some fresh herbs. It’s medium-bodied with brightness and freshness. Drink or hold.

59% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample. Less Merlot than usual. Earthy, brambly fruit. A touch of sweetness on the attack but it stays fresh. Quite lean with grainy tannins offering a light structure and some persistence. Slightly chewy finish. (JL)

The 2019 Chapelle de Potensac has a light but agreeable cherryade and crushed strawberry nose, nicely defined and straightforward. The palate is ripe on the entry with slightly chewy tannins, but I find this a little short in the scheme of things, leaving me wanting more.

Rose stem notes, knitted-down tannins that aren’t giving too much away, opening to raspberry and redcurrant fruit. Short on the finish but this is attractive and unfussy. 4% new oak.

The 2019 Chapelle de Potensac is composed of 59% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with exuberant scents of Bing cherries, mulberries, and redcurrant jelly with hints of bay leaves, rosehip tea, and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has youthful red berry flavors with a zippy line and chewy tannins, finishing lifted.

What a burst of fruity freshness in this bouquet, with nuances of red berries and licorice. From the very first sip, this wine begs to be enjoyed. Its savory, easy-drinking, and juicy character on the palate contributes to that feeling as well.

Logo on the cork: DIAM5 Dark color, medium intensity and slightly evolved. Moderately intense nose, fruity and lightly vanilla. Light but flavorful palate, with brightness on the finish and no tannin. Medium body and length.
