Description
The estate
The earliest signs of Chateau d'Esclans date back to the Roman Empire. At that time, it was an observation post on the Gulf of Frejus, in order to prevent possible maritime invasions. Built in the 19th century, the current castle has had many owners. Owned by Sacha Lichine since 2006, Chateau d'Esclans has contributed to the development of Cotes de Provence rose wines. It has now become a world reference for Provence roses with its Whispering Angel wine.
The vineyard
On the Cote d'Azur, just a stone's throw from the ancient Roman city of Frejus, lies the Esclans valley, home to the 44-hectare vineyard of the eponymous chateau. Between the pine forest and the sea breeze, the varied terroirs are home to 35-year-old vines. They are cultivated on clay-limestone soils and on sandy gravel, depending on the plot. This patchwork of terroirs provides the chateau’s wines with great and diverse characters.
Vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested exclusively at night and in the morning, to preserve their freshness. Electronically sorted, the grapes are then destemmed and lightly crushed before being pressed. The best free-run juice and press juice are then blended for the fermentation and aging periods in stainless steel tanks with a regulated temperature.
The blend
Whispering Angel 2020 is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Vermentino.
