Description
A Legendary Cabernet Sauvignon by Familia Torres
Established in 1870 by brothers Jaime Torres Vendrell and Miguel Torres Vendrell, Torres wine has, in just a century and a half, transformed into the most recognized wine brand of Spain, a vast empire of vines built on excellence. Today, the 5th generation of the family runs 3,200 acres of estate vineyards, spread out over Spain's best DO and DOC appellations, as well as China, Chile and California. "Mas la Plana" is the true flagship of the Familia Torres lineup, a strong symbol for the visionary efforts of Miguel A. Torres to introduce French grape varieties and winemaking techniques to Penedes in the 1960's. The most famous wine made by Torres, Mas la Plana has received a stunning 107 awards from wine critics around the world since its debut vintage in 1970. This wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the family's Mas la Plana estate in the DO Penedes appellation of Catalonia, Spain. The terroir is characterized by deep alluvial soils interwoven with layers of gravel, sand and clay. This legendary red Penedes is fermented in stainless steel with 15-25 days of maceration on the skins. It is aged in French oak barrels (85% new) for a period of 18 months. The 2015 vintage in Penedes was characterized by dry weather and slightly cooler than average temperatures, with little rainfall until July and August.
The Mas la Plana 2015 by Familia Torres boasts a very intense cherry-red color in the glass. The nose unravels exquisite and complex black fruit aromas, especially jammy, ripe blueberries, along with roasted coffee, a black pepper heat and vanilla nuances. The palate is quite powerful with austere, yet fine-grained tannins that will soften over time spent aging in the bottle. A very polished and balanced red wine to consume through 2030.
