James Suckling

Aldo Fiordelli

Overt and fruity with assertive raspberries, bay leaves and roasted black peppercorns. The full-bodied, supple palate is warming, showing crisp acidity and tight yet ripe tannins. A bit sticky in the finish. Drinkable now but best from 2028.

The elegance and complexity of a red wine from Veneto

The estate

Founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi, the estate has established itself as a benchmark in Veneto. Now led by the fourth generation, including Giancarlo, Pierangelo and Piergiorgio Tommasi, the family estate oversees an extensive vineyard spread across Italy. A committed advocate of environmentally friendly viticulture, the producer favours elegance and an authentic expression of terroir. Complete control over the production process, from vine to bottle, reflects the family's ongoing commitment to impeccable quality.

The vineyard

The grapes used to produce this Amarone della Valpolicella Classico come from the renowned terroirs of La Groletta and Conca d'Oro. Located at an altitude of 250 metres, these terraced plots benefit from a southwest exposure and the breeze from Lake Garda. The vines, trained according to the traditional Veronese pergola system, thrive on clay-limestone soils rich in fossils, providing excellent drainage. The high planting density and limited yields ensure optimal concentration in the berries.

The vintage

The year 2021 began with a cold, dry winter, followed by a balanced spring and a mild summer. Well-distributed rainfall throughout the growing season helped maintain the vines' balance. These weather conditions favoured a slow, complete ripening, resulting in a harvest between late September and early October with perfectly healthy grapes.

Winemaking and aging

The production of this 2021 vintage relies on the traditional appassimento technique. After manual selection, the bunches rest on bamboo racks in a ventilated room for about a hundred days, losing a significant portion of their water content in the process. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts for around 25 days. Finally, the wine is aged for three years in large Slavonian oak casks, before resting for an additional year in bottle.

Grape varieties

Corvina (50%), Corvinone (30%), Rondinella (15%), Oseleta (5%).
