Description
The elegance and the powerfulness of a South African white wine
The estate
Located in the Swartland region of South Africa, the Sadie Family estate was founded in 1999 by Eben Sadie and his brother and sister. After having travelled extensively in Europe, this passionate winegrower decided to revive the old vines of his native land while planting grape varieties from southern Europe adapted to the Mediterranean-like climate of the Cape. This atypical South African winemaker is today the charismatic face of the revival of quality South African wines. For more than two decades, his constant quest for excellent quality has been unparalleled and his wines are now sought after all over the world.
The vineyard
Mev. Kirsten Chenin Blanc 2021 is a Western Cape wine from a single plot in Jonkershoek, planted between 1905 and 1920 on granite soil.
The wine
This Stellenbosch wine is named after the owner of its original vineyard, discovered in the Jonkershoek Valley by Eben Sadie, who convinced Mrs Kirsten to grow it. It is said to be the oldest Chenin Blanc in South Africa.
Winemaking and ageing
Ripening about two weeks earlier than the old vines, the young vines in this vineyard are harvested first and vinified separately. Whole bunch pressing in old 500 litre barrels for the young vines and in an old foudre for the old vines. The wine was racked for about 12 hours and aged in barrels and tuns on the lees for 12 months. Two weeks before bottling, the juice was transferred to vats where about 50 mg/litre of sulphur was added to protect the wine. The wine was then decanted normally until it reached perfect clarity before bottling without filtration.
