Description
A Penfolds’ Coonawarra Shiraz with an Intense Aromatic Expression
The Penfolds Estates’ Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz comes from a temperate climate, and offers a stark contrast to the ripeness and opulence of the Kalimna Bin 28 from Barossa Valley’s warm climate. Bin 128 hails from the «terra rossa» soils of Coonawarra, a wine region in the Limestone Coast zone in Southern Australia. Coonawarra is an Aboriginal word that means honeysuckle. Coonawarra has very unique rust-coloured soils that are the result from an iron-oxide based top soil of clay or loam lying on top of a bed of limetsone.
Released for the first time as a 1962 vintage, Penfolds' Bin 128 expresses all the typical features of a Shiraz from this region. There is an intense aromatic expression of fresh and pure fruit. To preserve these aromatic features, the wine has been aged in both new and old French oak barrels since 1980.
This Australian wine reveals a beautiful mauve color. On the nose, red fruits evolve into peppery notes as smoked meat and gamey aromas add intensity to the bouquet. On the palate, there are fresh notes of cut grass, sage and spices like curry and cumin. There is finesse to the body with a velvety texture, and the tannins are well-structured and still firm. There is a pleasuring mineral finish that leaves a slightly grainy texture. This is a superb expression of a Coonawarra Australian Shiraz that will continue to develop until 2030.
