Discover Merlot Wines

Merlot is a red wine grape variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. It is the predominant variety in most wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, the area in which the variety is thought to have originated.   In France, Merlot is the most widely planted red wine variety, and it is also extremely popular in northern Italy and the warmer areas of southern Switzerland. The popularity of Merlot in the United States resulted in a significant increase in planting in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly in California and Washington, on the country's West Coast.

For this Merlot Gift Set, the Millesima team has curated bottles that show different expressions of Merlot from different leading regions of the world. Explore the diversity of Merlot through its many styles and learn how climatic differences and terroir can change the body and flavors of a wine.

The Merlot Gift Set contains three unique bottles with three different styles: Tenuta di Trinoro is an Italian wine producer, located on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. The vineyard is a natural amphitheater, where the mesoclimate is warm and well-protected by the surrounding hills; Stags’ Leap is one of the oldest wine estates within the acclaimed Stags Leap District, producing wines expressive of a unique terroir; and Chateau de Sales is a Bordeaux producer and the largest estate in the Pomerol appellation, with a great reputation for producing wines ready to drink in their youth.

Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole 2019

Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot - Tuscany

The second label of Tenuta di Trinoro, Le Cupole was first produced in 1995. It is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with percentages varying with each vintage. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in one to three year old barriques and cement, Le Cupole is velvety and approachable. This wine hits the palate with exuberance, full of fleshy, bright fruit, extracted tannins, and rich color.

Stags’ Leap Winery Merlot 2018

Merlot - California

With freshness emphasizing its southern Napa origins, the Stags’ Leap Winery Merlot shows tons of juicy black cherry and dark plum fruit alongside sarsaparilla notes of vanilla, caramel and allspice, lending a rich warmth to the nose. Savory and sweet herbal elements of cherry kirsch, bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, cola and chaparral floral blossom, thyme, mint and rosemary, also come through, along with sweet baking spice notes, imparted from the oak aging.

Chateau de Sales Pomerol 2012

Merlot, Cabernet Franc - Bordeaux

Chateau de Sales is produced with sustainable cultivation methods and is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. At the tasting, we notice a very viscous, bright red color. The nose offers a touch of ripe red fruit and subtle notes of oak that render this wine quite charming. This Chateau de Sales 2012 has a round, pleasant mouthfeel. One can even detect subtle vanilla aromas. The finish offers a unique elegance and great freshness.
