Discover Merlot Wines
Merlot is a red wine grape variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. It is the predominant variety in most wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, the area in which the variety is thought to have originated. In France, Merlot is the most widely planted red wine variety, and it is also extremely popular in northern Italy and the warmer areas of southern Switzerland. The popularity of Merlot in the United States resulted in a significant increase in planting in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly in California and Washington, on the country's West Coast.
For this Merlot Gift Set, the Millesima team has curated bottles that show different expressions of Merlot from different leading regions of the world. Explore the diversity of Merlot through its many styles and learn how climatic differences and terroir can change the body and flavors of a wine.
The Merlot Gift Set contains three unique bottles with three different styles: Chateau Belle-Vue is a Cru Bourgeois from the Haut-Medoc appellation and lies just south of the Margaux appellation; Gaja is one of the best-known wine producers in all of Italy; and Domaine de Chevalier is at the top of Bordeaux's greatest Crus Classes.
Chateau Belle Vue Haut-Medoc 2014
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot - Bordeaux
The Château Belle-Vue 2014 is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 22% Petit Verdot, cropped at 53 hectoliter per hectare and aged in 25% new oak. The nose is a little austere at first, but it begins to open up with great style. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe blackberry and undergrowth notes, fine tannin and light white-pepper tones on the finish. This is a fine Haut-Médoc to drink over the next decade.
Gaja Ca’ Marcanda Promis 2019
Merlot - Tuscany
Always an approachable wine, the Promis blend is also well structured and voluptuous on the palate, yet with a refreshing acidity. 2019 Promis displays terrific harmony and a saline quality which characterizes the grapes from Bolgheri, so close to the seaside. These qualities combine with persistent hints of aromatic herbs, which come from the windier area of Bibbona.
L’Esprit de Chevalier Pessac-Leognan 2018
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon - Bordeaux
L’Esprit de Chevalier red 2018 shows off a beautiful red color with a black center. The aromatic bouquet is very expressive, revealing plenty of black fruits, including blueberry, cassis, blackberry and cherry. On the palate, an exquisite sensation of creaminess is perfectly balanced by a great fruity freshness and a remarkable tension that lingers long in the finish. A fantastic red wine from Pessac-Leognan that can be fully appreciated in its youth.
