The Elegance and Precision of a Wine from the Pommard Appellation by Joseph Drouhin

The Estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure in Burgundy, France. Now run by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as president, supported by Véronique, Philippe and Laurent, the estate oversees a vineyard of around 100 hectares. A pioneer in environmental respect, the estate has applied the principles of organic farming since 1993 and biodynamics since 1996, seeking to express the purity of each terroir with characteristic elegance.

The Vineyard

Located in the Côte de Beaune, the Pommard appellation rests on varied geological terroirs. The vines, facing south and south-east at altitudes of between 250 and 330 meters, thrive on soils combining clay and limestone. The lower slopes consist of ancient alluvial deposits, while the mid-slopes feature well-drained rocky scree. The upper slopes are distinguished by Jurassic marl and iron-rich soils, offering ideal conditions for vine cultivation.

The Vintage

The year 2023 stood out for particularly warm weather conditions, even surpassing the temperatures of the previous year. This generous climate allowed the growing cycle to unfold optimally, resulting in an abundant harvest and grapes that reached an excellent level of ripeness.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes for the Pommard Village 2023 are hand-harvested into small perforated crates in September, followed by rigorous sorting if necessary. After complete destemming, maceration and fermentation begin using indigenous yeasts in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by punching down and pumping over. After vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels, around 20% of which are new.
