The Beaujolais Cru of Fleurie is often called the “Queen of Beaujolais” referencing the fresh, elegant femininity the wines can exude. In the heart of Fleurie, lies Domaine des Marrans, established in 1970 by Jean-Jacques Melinand. Starting out with a mere four hectares of vines, Jean-Jacques expanded over the years acquiring several plots across Fleurie, Morgon and Beaujolais Village appellation. Since 2008, Jean-Jacques’ son Mathieu has operated the Domaine after studying oneology and working in Australia and New Zealand. Although natural winemaking is nothing new in Beaujolais, Mathieu has kept the Domaine’s tradition alive with his hands off approach to create pure and lively Gamay.
The Domaine des Marrans vineyards in Fleurie are planted on pink granite soil. All farming is done organically and whole grape clusters undergo semi-carbonic maceration with only indigenous yeasts used during fermentation. The wine is then barrel aged for 10-12 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is wine that is a bona fide expression of the terrior.
The Domaine des Marrans Fleurie is fruit-forward, with notes of fresh red berries and black cherry. It has a slightly smoky note with a racy minerality and very low tannin. Les Marrans 2018 Fleurie is ready to drink any night of the week!
