Description
The estate
Clos des Lunes tells the story of an ambitious adventure which began in 2011 as part of a report and a challenge: to develop a legendary dry wine on the exceptional Sauternes terroir. This proved to be a successful gamble for the emblematic Olivier Bernard and his family, the owners of Domaine de Chevalier in Leognan who, with passion and energy, have worked to make Clos des Lunes one of the greatest references of Dry White Bordeaux wines on this land of sweet wines.
The vineyard
The Clos des Lunes vineyard covers 65 hectares in the hilly terrains of Sauternes. The vines, aged by 35 years on average, are planted on a mosaic of soils, each of which contribute to the signature style of the estate’s wines. While the deep Sauternes gravels impart power, the freshness that characterizes the gravelly soils on clay-limestone substrate is combined with the finesse and elegance of the red earths of Barsac.
The wine
Prestigious and rare, the Clos des Lunes "Lune d’Or" tells of Olivier Bernard’s ambition: to produce one of the greatest wines in the world. Made from a rigorous manual selection of berries which come from very old vines, this cuvee with significant aging potential is intended to be the ultimate expression of purity and complexity.
Winemaking and aging
Manual harvests in crates by successive sorting, depending on the level of ripeness. Slow, pneumatic pressing. No destemming or maceration. Natural, gravity-fed settling in a cold room, accompanied by regular stirring of the lees. Aging lasts for 12 to 15 months in barrels.
Blend
The 2020 Clos des Lunes "Lune d’Or" is made of a blend of Semillon (70%) and Sauvignon (30%).
