Description
The refinement and aromatic finesse of a red wine from Moulis
The estate
It was in 2008 that the Cuvelier family, already owners of the Premier Grand Cru Classe of Saint-Emilion Clos Fourtet, acquired Chateau Poujeaux. Since then, this beautiful Medoc property has experienced a true renaissance. Managed by Mathieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne, with vinifications carried out under the watchful eye of oenologist-consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, Chateau Poujeaux is today one of the finest references in the Moulis appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux.
The vineyard
Located to the north-east of the Moulis-en-Medoc appellation, the Chateau Poujeaux vineyard is set all in one piece. The vines benefit from an exceptional location on the outcropping Graves de Grand Poujeaux. This great terroir is perfectly suited to the Medoc grape varieties. From this harmony between terroir and grape variety are born great wines typical of the Moulis appellation, offering a great density and elegance.
The vintage
A raily autumn gave way to a meteorology with contrasts between humidity and extreme softness. The Chateau teams redoubled their efforts to manage the waterlogged soils and protect the vineyard from strong mildew pressure. The vegetative cycle began early. In mid-June the rains finally stopped, giving way to a scorching summer. Beginning early, the harvest allowed for the harvest of fully ripe grapes. Despite lower than average yields, the quality was heterogeneous with concentrated Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot revealing rich tannins and a beautiful aromatic complexity. 2020 perpetuates the series of fine vintages, with great balance, finesse and depth.
The vinification and aging
Plot vinification. Fermentation of whole fruit in 51 thermoregulated stainless steel, wood and concrete vats. Extraction by pumping over. Vatting for 20 to 25 days. Aging lasted 12 months in barrels (33% new oak).
The blend
The Chateau Poujeaux 2020 is made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon (54%), merlot (40%), petit verdot (6%).
The tasting
