Vinum

Perfectly polished, fruity, elegant, yet dense and with ideal length, even better than en primeur.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Delivers black currant and cherry flavors laced with warm stone, tobacco and savory notes. Offers good range and character, ending with a tug of earth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. 23,000 cases made.

Decanter

Bright nose, strawberries, red cherries and touches of dark chocolate with soft perfumed aromas. Nice plump fruit here with a milky, chalky edge to the tannins that are quite mouth-coating right now. It has good drive and underlying acidity giving lift, and you can feel the powerful, well-handled fruit underneath. Black cherries, fig, some prune and dark chocolate notes. A deeper, headier style that will be great in a few years.

James Suckling

Very attractive chocolate, red-chili and cedar aromas and flavors. Lavender, too. Medium body with firm, polished tannins and a caressing finish. Pretty texture to this. It will be ready sooner than some. Try after 2024.

The 2019 Poujeaux has a very delineated, focused bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and light tea leaf scents, one of the most complex I have encountered from this great estate in recent years. The medium-bodied palate is fresh, vibrant and grippy, with slightly chalky tannins and a saline, persistent finish. Quite structured and broody, this Moulis deserves ample time in bottle.

Espresso, black pepper, chocolate-covered blackberries and currants come together to create the perfume. The wine is plush, polished, rich and supple, with a burst of ripe, sweet, chewy fruits, espresso and dark chocolate on the finish. Give it a few years to soften and fill out, and it’s going to deliver the goods for up to two decades after that. The wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2024–2040.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep, dark ruby; opaque core; purple reflections; slight brightening at the rim. Delicately savoury cassis on the nose, dark berries and cherry with tobacco notes in the background. Complex, juicy and fresh with tight tannins at the core, lively dark nougat aromas and good length. Certain ageing potential for many years.

Pure, modern and glossy within the frames of classic elegance. Pure dark fruit notes, wild berries, cassis, tobacco and fine toast. The palate shares freshness and density, with a long and finely rounded finish.

The 2019 Château Poujeaux showed beautifully, with classic Médoc notes of red and black currants, sweet tobacco, spice, and some floral and cedar nuances. With medium-bodied richness, supple tannins, and a great mid-palate, this thoroughly satisfying, impeccably made 2019 will keep for 10-15 years.

Kunz barrel sample 2020: dense, deep, elegant bouquet, blueberries, black cassis, cedar, currants, slate. Densely knit, elegant, powerful palate with dark, fine fruit, a finely muscled, dense structure, complex dark aromatics, plenty of fine tannins, very long, dark, aromatic finish.

Poujeaux is a well-constructed wine that often needs a few years to soften into itself, and is capable of aging at least a decade and usually two—certainly in serious vintages such as 2019. Expect plenty of brambled fruits with a rustic hedgerow edge, juicy licorice and cocoa, smoked earth and campfire. Not quite at the heights of Poujeaux in 2016 or 2010, but still excellent quality. 48 hl/ha yield (a good result after a low-yielding 2018). They have 7 ha in organic trials since 2018, out of their 70 ha in total. 33% new oak.

The 2019 Poujeaux is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It features scents of cassis, black raspberries, and redcurrants, followed by wafts of wild thyme and cedar. Medium-bodied, the palate has uncomplicated black fruits on offer, going a tad hollow in the middle and chewy on the finish.

Bettane+Desseauve

[ Primeurs 2019 rating: 91 ] Lovely colour; an appealing, complex nose with plum and red and black fruits; good body and good tannins. That said, given this terroir one might expect a bit more vinosity and personality, as in the 1960s and 1970s.

Le Figaro Vin

An enticing nose of sweet fruit and freshly cut flowers. Suave and sophisticated on the palate, with a silky texture and notes of fresh coffee and chocolate. The fruit and the bitters are in perfect harmony, and the finish is quite caressing.

Poujeaux remains very true to its style and stands out for the consistency of its quality. The integration of oak is perfectly controlled, enhancing the overall complexity. Poujeaux aptly embodies the Médoc’s ability to make Cabernet Sauvignon shine within a blend. The attack is juicy and creamy, and the wine is well-structured thanks to a solid framework. A reliable, unflappable, chiselled Poujeaux, ready to stand the test of time. What a great success!

Vertdevin

The nose is distinguished, offering power, subtle depth and fine intensity. It reveals notes of blackcurrant, a sense of terroir and, more lightly, strawberry, combined with small touches of wild berries, violet and licorice, as well as discreet hints of nutmeg, fresh blond tobacco and sweet spices. The palate is fruity and balanced, delivering freshness, good definition, indulgence, a tangy backbone, refined minerality, fine tension and precision. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/ripe wild blackcurrant, small juicy/fresh black berries and, more lightly, wild raspberry, together with touches of lily and violet, plus hints of tonka bean, dried almond, fresh blond tobacco and toasted hazelnut. The tannins are pronounced and very discreetly firm.

Logo on the capsule: LA I gave it my highest score during the En Primeur tastings. Confirmed! Dark, intense, and deep color. Beautifully complex, pure nose, slightly smoky and noble. Meticulous from the very first sip, with a long yet fleshy body, the wine caresses the palate, delivering a previously unknown sense of completeness. Very long finish with multidimensional flavors. A great success and a new outsider.

The wine with its balance between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is full of dark fruits and rich black tannins. It is a dense wine ready for long-term aging. Drink from 2026.

Description

The aromatic intensity of a velvety and elegant Moulis red wine

The property
In 2008, the Cuvelier family, already owners of Clos Fourtet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, acquired the Château Poujeaux. Since then, the beautiful Médoc property has experienced a true renaissance. Led by Mathieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne, with vinifications carried out under the watchful eye of consulting oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, Château Poujeaux stands out among the most beautiful references of the Moulis appellation.

The vineyard
Located in the northeast of the Moulis appellation, the vineyard of Château Poujeaux extends in one piece. The vines benefit from an exceptional location on the slopes of Graves de Grand Poujeaux. This great terroir perfectly benefits the Médoc grape varieties. From this terroir-grape variety harmony, great Red wines typical of the Moulis appellation are born, combining density and elegance.

The vintage
After a mild winter with abundant rainfall, spring was disrupted by numerous stormy and windy episodes. Summer then arrived with scorching temperatures. In September, the return of milder temperatures and some rain allowed for a longer maturation of the berries. At Château Poujeaux, the harvest thus began on September 25 and ended on October 14 with a very satisfactory harvest, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In the cellar, the vinifications were announced under the best auspices thanks to grapes with great richness and beautiful aromatic complexity, heralding the birth of a very great vintage.

Aging
12 months of aging. 33% in new barrels and 67% in barrels of one and two wines.

Blend
Cabernet sauvignon (50%), merlot (45%), petit verdot (5%).

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Poujeaux 2019

Tasting

Deep Color with a shimmering garnet red hue tinged with violet reflections.

Nose
Intensely aromatic, the Nose exhales beautiful notes of black fruits combined with more floral notes of violet. Aeration reveals more mineral notes of flint and smoky notes reminiscent of a cigar box.

Palate
On the Palate, this great Moulis Red wine seduces with its supple attack and gradually unfolds a velvety texture with silky tannins. With finesse and elegance, the wine lingers long in the finish on mineral notes and with a beautiful aromatic persistence.
