Description
A rich and delicate Haut-Medoc red wine
The estate
Located in the Haut-Medoc appellation, between Margaux and Saint Julien, Chateau Malescasse is situated on the highest point of the Medoc region. The estate was acquired in 2012 by Vignobles Austruy, whose goal was to enhance the potential of this fine estate. In order to attain this goal, considerable work was carried out both in the vineyard and in the cellars. Since the new classification of the Crus Bourgeois in 2020, Chateau Malescasse was named as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.
The vineyard
Chateau Malescasse 2021 is an Haut-Medoc wine that stems from a 15-hectare single vineyard planted on quaternary gravel and sandy soils, typical features of the Medoc region.
The vintage
A rainy autumn and a mild winter preceded a spring season that was marked by an episode of frost. Thanks to the estuary's natural barrier-like protection, the estate’s vineyard was not impacted. The flowering period was disrupted due to both the temperature variations and the unstable weather conditions. The month of July was marked by little sunshine. Harvesting took place from September 27th to October 14th.
Vinification and aging
Subsequent to harvesting the grapes in crates, they are destemmed. The grapes are sorted based on their density. The unpressed grapes are gravity-fed into small wooden and concrete vats. No crushing. Use of active dry yeast. Vatting time for 3 to 4 weeks. Gentle extraction with short punching of the cap and pumping over. Pressing with a vertical pneumatic press.
The blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (65%)
Merlot (35%).
