Description
Château Le Pin 2019 Tasting Notes and Serving Recommendations
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a deep garnet-purple hue, dense and youthful, reflecting the ripeness and concentration typical of Pomerol merlot.
Nose
The nose is expressive and layered, opening on black and red fruit, floral notes, and a touch of spice, all wrapped in a refined oak influence from barrel aging.
Palate
The palate is full and velvety, carried by a surprisingly lively acidity that keeps the wine balanced despite its richness. The texture is silky and the finish stretches on at remarkable length.
Serving and cellaring
Château Le Pin 2019 can be enjoyed relatively young, as its aromatic generosity and silky texture make it approachable early. That said, this vintage is built for long-term cellaring, with an aging potential estimated at two to three decades, suggesting it will continue to evolve gracefully well into the 2040s.
Other characteristics
Château Le Pin 2019 reaches an alcohol level close to 14.7%, a reflection of the warm, sun-filled growing season. The wine is aged in a proportion of new oak estimated between 70% and 80%, slightly below the estate's traditional use of 100% new barrels.
Château Le Pin 2019: A Merlot-Based Pomerol from a Micro-Estate on Gravel and Iron-Rich Clay
The Estate
Château Le Pin, located in Bordeaux's Pomerol appellation, was created in 1979 when Belgian wine merchant Jacques Thienpont purchased a one-hectare parcel next to Vieux Château Certan. He remains the estate's owner today, while Diana Berrouet-Garcia has directed the Domaines Jacques Thienpont group since 2022, with Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont overseeing the vineyard and winemaking. Gradually expanded to about 2.7 hectares, Le Pin produces only a few hundred cases annually and, despite carrying no official classification, is regarded as one of Bordeaux's most sought-after cult wines.
The Vineyard
The vineyard sits in the Catusseau area, at the heart of the Pomerol plateau, close to Vieux Château Certan. The soil structure combines a surface layer of deep, ancient gravel with underlying beds of iron-rich clay, locally known as "crasse de fer," which allows the vines to draw moisture even during dry spells. Plantings are almost entirely merlot, complemented by a few cabernet franc vines that are not used in the final blend. Vine age averages around 35 to 38 years, with some rows dating back to the 1950s, planted at a density of about 6,000 vines per hectare. Yields remain naturally low, rarely exceeding 30 hectoliters per hectare, and harvesting is done entirely by hand.
The Vintage
The 2019 growing season in Pomerol was warm and largely dry, with cooler nights that helped preserve acidity in the grapes. This combination allowed for a long, steady ripening period, particularly benefiting vineyards with deeper water reserves, such as those rooted in iron-rich clay, which were able to sustain the vines through the warmer stretches of the season without excessive stress.
Winemaking and aging
For Château Le Pin 2019, hand-harvested grapes were sorted in several passes before being moved by gravity into small stainless-steel conical tanks, each matched to a specific micro-parcel of the vineyard. Fermentation took place under controlled temperatures, after which the wine underwent malolactic fermentation directly in new French oak barrels, a technique the estate helped pioneer. Aging continued in new oak for around 18 months, with the proportion of new barrels for this vintage set between 70% and 80%. The wine was fined using egg whites and bottled without filtration to preserve its full aromatic and textural complexity.
Grape Varieties
Château Le Pin 2019 is produced from merlot, which makes up virtually the entire blend, with a small number of cabernet franc vines present in the vineyard but not incorporated into the finished wine.
