Description
An unctuous and aromatic Pomerol red wine
The estate
Chateau Le Gay is located in the Pomerol appellation. A property of the Robin sisters, who are recognized and respected in Pomerol for their know-how and their famous family motto "Quality beats quantity", Chateau Le Gay is today one of the most beautiful wine estates on the right bank of Bordeaux.
The vineyard
The Chateau Le Gay vineyard covers 10.5 hectares in one piece. The vines, 40 years old on average, are planted in the exceptional clay-gravelly soils for which the Pomerol appellation is famous.
The vintage
A warm and rainy winter favored an early budding of the vines. At the end of March, three wind turbines were put into operation, as well as candles to tackle the onset of frost. The warm temperatures at the beginning of April significantly boosted the development of the vines. May was marked by strong sunshine and a significant rise in temperatures, leading to a rapid growth of the vines and an even flowering. The alternation of these weather conditions resulted in strong mildew pressure, fortunately limited by the good weather and the wind, which dried the vegetation during the month of May. The beginning of June was marked by a drop in temperatures, accompanied by thunderstorms. The hot and dry weather from July 13 accelerated veraison, reducing the risk of mildew but also causing water stress among the younger vines, due to the lack of rain. The scorching temperatures and drought in August caused severe water stress on plots less than ten years old. The harvest yielded grapes with good maturity, the signs of a promising vintage despite extreme weather conditions.
Vinification and aging
During the harvest, a double sorting is carried out on the bunches and individual grapes. 100% micro-vinification in new oak barrels. 7 to 10 day pre-fermentation maceration. Long post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in barrels, as is the aging.
The blend
The Chateau Le Gay 2020 is a 100% Merlot.
