Chateau La Croix du Casse is a Pomerol that stretches across the southern tip of the Pomerol plateau. Philippe Casteja's vines are planted on soils composed of gravel and sand with a sub-soil of iron.
Often reputed for its wines combining seduction, finesse and charm, La Croix du Casse 2016 does not deviate from its recognizable characteristics. The 2016 vintage possesses a remarkable weight, with rich finely-integrated tannins. Its color is dark, and densely concentrated. La Croix du Casse 2016 is a very floral wine from its approach, which reveals an aromatic sparkle that is seductive and refreshing. The mouth is ample, with very ripe tannins. Masterfully powerful!
Picked 10 October and 13 October from the Merlot and Cabernet Franc respectively, the 2016 La Croix du Casse has an intense bouquet with blackberry and boysneberry fruit that just needs to manifest a little more finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin on the entry, decent fruit although I find that the 40% new oak (actually 50% in my barrel sample) does not quite meld with the tannins as well as I hoped and leaves the finish a little raw.
