Description
The generosity and elegance of a Pauillac wine
The estate
A Fifth Growth in the Official Classification of 1855, Château Haut-Batailley is a benchmark of the Pauillac appellation. Its name derives from the word "bataille" (battle), in remembrance of the fighting said to have taken place on the estate at the end of the Hundred Years' War, in the 15th century.
Since 2017, Château Haut-Batailley has been run by the Cazes family, who continue the work begun by the Borie family in 1930 and preserve the style and quality of this essential Médoc growth, on the left bank of the Bordeaux region.
The vineyard
A benchmark among the great Pauillac wines, Château Haut-Batailley oversees roughly forty hectares of land, of which 22 hectares are under vine. Averaging 35 years of age, this vineyard, located in the south of the appellation, grows on soils made up of Garonne gravel and clay.
The wine
Verso is the second wine of Château Haut-Batailley.
The vintage
A vintage marked by various weather challenges, 2017 put the Château Haut-Batailley vineyard to the test with water stress and heat. The estate was nonetheless spared from the disastrous frost at the end of April. The temperature swings in late August allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo an initial sorting in the vineyard, followed by two further sortings before and after destemming. Maceration lasts 3 weeks, accompanied by pumping-over and rack-and-return techniques. Aging lasts 12 months and takes place in once-used barrels.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (60%)
Merlot (40%)
