Description
The elegance and finesse of a rosé wine from Côtes de Provence
The property
Château d'Esclans is located in the heart of Provence, north-east of Saint-Tropez, with the Mediterranean in the background. The first traces of the Château d'Esclans date back to the Roman Empire. At that time, it was an observation post on the Gulf of Fréjus, built to protect against maritime invasions. Château d'Esclans is an extraordinary estate in deepest Provence. The Château is known for its old Grenache vines, which produce a grape that has more concentrated scents than the young vines.
Built in the 19th century, the current château has had many owners. Owned by Sacha Lichine since 2006, Château d'Esclans has contributed to the development of Côtes de Provence wines. It has now become a world reference for Provence rosés with the Whispering Angel cuvée. As a négociant and winemaker, Caves d'Esclans uses vineyards, grapes and wines from Château d'Esclans and other local producers to create what is now considered the best rosé in the world.
The vineyard
On the Côte d'Azur, just a stone's throw from the ancient Roman city of Fréjus, lies the Esclans valley, home to the 44-hectare vineyard of the eponymous château. The vines are 35 years old on average and are planted on vineyards composed of clay, limestone or sandy gravel, depending on the plot. This mosaic of terroirs ensures a very diverse character for these great Côtes de Provence wines.
With the aim to obtain grapes and wines of the best possible quality, a privileged relationship is maintained with local grape producers, who are committed to the Caves d'Esclans, and whose vineyards are maintained with the same quality requirements as those of the Château d'Esclans vineyards.
Winemaking and ageing
A method combining traditional and modern techniques. After a precise selection, the grapes are harvested by hand at night and transported to the cellars. Then, the grapes are sorted by electronic optics ; destemming and crushing are carried out with care and delicacy at 7-8°C to avoid oxidisation. Blending is then carried out with the best free-run and press juices from the Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan and Vermentino grape varieties. Finally, fermentation and maturation continue in stainless steel tanks with individually controlled temperatures to guarantee the quality of Whispering Angel.
