Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Carmes de Rieussec opens with evolving honey-coated almonds, lemon pie and dried pineapple scents with hints of candied ginger, praline and cinnamon toast. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, it has compelling savory accents and just enough freshness to sustain the long, honey-nut finish.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A bright, juicy, mouthfilling style, with enticing apricot, toasted almond and fig flavors backed by a flash of candied orange peel on the finish. A little rambunctious in the end, but still solid. Drink now through 2017.

James Suckling

A thick and rich wine with honey, spice and dried mushroom. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with a medium finish. Dense and straightforward. Drink now.

Description

A rich, refined and seductive fine Sauternes wine

The estate

Chateau Rieussec is located in the prestigious Sauternes appellation, in the south of the Bordeaux region. This chateau is steeped in history and belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon in the 18th century. It was then sold as "National Property" following the French Revolution. Classified as an 1855 Sauternes First Growth, Chateau Rieussec was acquired by the Rothschild family in 1984.

The vineyard

The estate’s Second Wine, Carmes de Rieussec, is a Sauternes wine that stems from a sandy-clay gravel terroir. The vineyard of Chateau Rieussec is situated on the border between Fargues and Sauternes and covers 93 hectares, thus making it one of the largest estates in the appellation.

The vintage

The unstable weather conditions at the beginning of the year gave way to milder weather in June. The summer was dry, with rainy spells that helped the vineyard. The alternation between warm days and cool nights was ideal for the slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The harvest was carried out in 4 selections from September 17th to October 15th.

Vinification and aging

30% of the wine is vinified in vats and 70% in barrels. The wine is aged for 18 months in used barrels from the Domaines Barons de Rothschild cooperage.
