Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Reserva 2022 from Bodega Marqués de Murrieta
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine reveals a deep ruby red colour with garnet hues, highlighted by legs that slowly trickle down the sides of the glass.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is both intense and complex. It exudes generous aromas of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, blackberry and plum. This fruity ensemble is enriched with notes of liquorice, subtle hints of chocolate liqueur, as well as nuances of cedar, dried flowers, eucalyptus and black pepper.
Palate
The attack is warm and smooth, opening onto a fleshy, round and perfectly balanced texture. The tannins, both firm and silky, elegantly structure the palate. A lovely acidity brings freshness and vibrancy, leading to a long, lingering finish with delicate hints of stewed fruit, balsamic and mineral notes.
Food and Wine Pairing
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with flavourful red meats as well as a wide variety of fish-based dishes.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this Reserva 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, after decanting for thirty to sixty minutes. With excellent ageing potential, it can be kept and enjoyed until around 2038.
The Elegance of a Wine from Bodega Marqués de Murrieta in Rioja
The Estate
Founded in 1852, Bodega Marqués de Murrieta is a historic and pioneering name in La Rioja. This exceptional estate is built around a vast, single-block vineyard of 300 hectares. Today, the property is passionately run by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family, under the leadership of Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga. By combining deep respect for tradition with constant technical modernisation, the estate crafts long-ageing wines that are internationally renowned for their classicism and remarkable precision.
The Vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the Finca Ygay vineyard, located in the Rioja Alta sub-region. The vines thrive at altitudes ranging from 320 to 485 metres, on terroirs composed mainly of clay-limestone soils. This topographical diversity allows for optimal ripeness while preserving the natural freshness of the berries.
The Vintage
2022 was marked by weather that was warmer and drier than usual, punctuated by two summer heatwaves. These conditions accelerated the vine's growth cycle, resulting in rapid grape ripening. To preserve the balance of the fruit, the manual harvest was carried out early, taking place from 7 to 23 September.
Winemaking and Ageing
After careful destemming, the different varieties making up this Reserva 2022 are fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasts between eight and ten days, with regular pumping-over and punching-down to gently extract aromas and polyphenols. The wine is then slowly pressed in vertical presses. Finally, it undergoes a long ageing process of 25 months in 225-litre American oak barrels, followed by a year of bottle rest before release.
