A red wine from Sicily born from an exceptional terroir
The estate
Located between 600 and 1,000 meters in altitude in the heart of Sicily, Tenuta delle Terre Nere stands at the pinnacle of Italian winemaking. Like an island within an island, the estate enjoys a prime location on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. Now overseeing more than 45 hectares, Marco de Grazia brings to life exceptional, distinctive wines, always guided by the same philosophy: achieving the feat of producing the best possible Italian wines on this terroir with its extreme climate.
The wine
Beyond promising great wines, 2022 is a special year for the estate, marking its 20th anniversary. For the occasion, the property has crafted an entirely new cuvée: the Etna Rosso 20th Anniversary 2022, a wine of remarkable freshness and finesse. Crafted from the prestigious Calderara Sottana vineyard, this wine embodies, for owner Marco de Grazia, the perfect balance between "the present and the future of Terre Nere."
The vineyard
Stony and steep, the terroir of this Etna wine stands out for its soil made up of black stones formed from basalt and pumice. The latter owes its distinctive character to the lava flows that Etna experienced in the past, over 60,000 years ago. On the northern side of the vineyard, only three grand cru sites are composed of this "pure elliptical terroir": Bocca d'Orzo, Calderara Sottana, and San Lorenzo. Planted on volcanic soils at an altitude of 600 to 700 meters, the vines yield a very low output of 4 to 5 tons of grapes per hectare. The vines are trained using the bush (gobelet) method.
Grape variety
Nerello Mascalese (100%)
An indigenous grape variety of Sicily, it produces wines with great character and power, boasting round tannins and pronounced acidity.
