Description
Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2016: a Saint-Julien with ripe tannins
The Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the second wine of Chateau Gruaud Larose. This wine comes from a vineyard of 82 hectares in the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines have an agerage age of 25 years of age and they grow in Garrone gravel. The aging is done in barrels (15% in new barrels and the rest in old barrels with one or two wines) for at least 14 months. The Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2016 is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc.
On the estate, the 2016 vintage was noted for its mild and rainy winter that led to an early bud burst. The spring was quite cool and wet, so there was a risk of fungal diseases. The flowering, however, still went perfectly due to a break from the bad weather at the most perfect time. From late June, the summer settled in with heat and drought. Due to a rainstorm on September 13, the vines could revive themselves and the berries could finish ripening until the harvest. The harvest took place from September 29 to October 15.
The Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2016 releases fruity aromas on the nose (black cherry, red plum) and floral scents (violets). Subtly oaky notes are well integrated. On the palate, the tannins are quite ripe and we can note tasty fruity touches in this silky wine. Best to enjoy by 2027.
