Josmeyer was founded in 1854 by Aloyse Meyer. The family business started as a wine merchant company in Alsace. Aloyse Meyer then decided to promote local wines such as Brand and Hengst, which have since been classified Grands Crus. Aloyse's son, Joseph Meyer, took over the business in 1933. However, the Second World War and the occupation forced Joseph to prematurely hand the reins over to his eldest son, Hubert. In 1963 he decided to add the first three letters of his father’s first name to the family name, thus creating the brand Josmeyer. Jean Meyer, Hubert's eldest son, succeeded his father as head of the business in 1966, bringing creativity and modernism.
