Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Equal parts ripe fruit and oily bitterness, with plush richness to the dried apricot and singed orange peel notes set against bitter green herbs and radish, which add a savory dimension. A vein of mineral-rich acidity cuts through, and citrus blossom, ginger and smoke details hang on the finish. A great example of a serious, balanced Gewürz, offering complexity with age. Drink now through 2029. 10,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.

James Suckling

Plenty of spice (mostly allspice and cinnamon) on the nose, but what makes this stand out in the field of regular-quality Alsace Gewurztraminers is the excellent balance, with lively acidity and a hint of tannin that underlines this through the clean finish. Unusually food-friendly for this grape. Drink now.

Musk, pineapple, rose petal, lychee. A cast-iron classic of the type. Absolutely dry, although the high alcohol gives richness. Long, perfumed, powerful. Shows no sign of being almost five years old! (RH)

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Gewurztraminer 2019 from Maison Trimbach

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a golden yellow hue with brilliant highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals a remarkable aromatic intensity, characteristic of Alsatian Gewurztraminer. Lychee aromas dominate the bouquet, accompanied by floral notes of rose and geranium. Nuances of sweet spices, particularly cinnamon and exotic spices, complete this generous aromatic palette.

Palate

On the palate, the wine stands out for its fullness and structure. The texture is rich and enveloping, while maintaining a remarkable freshness on the finish that brings balance and digestibility. The spicy aromas linger at length, offering an elegant and refreshing finish.

Food and wine pairings

This dry Gewurztraminer is an ideal companion for Asian cuisine, particularly Thai or Indian spiced dishes. It also pairs remarkably well with bold cheeses such as Alsatian Munster. As an aperitif, its aromatic character will charm while remaining perfectly balanced.

Serving and storage

The Gewurztraminer 2019 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until around 2029.

A lively and elegant Alsace Gewurztraminer by Trimbach

The estate

Founded in 1626 in Riquewihr, Maison Trimbach is one of the oldest winemaking dynasties in Alsace. Based in Ribeauvillé since 1920, the estate now manages approximately sixty hectares of vines, thirty percent of which are classified as Grands Crus. Led by the twelfth generation with Jean Trimbach and progressively joined by the thirteenth generation (Anne, Frédérique, Julien and Pauline), the Maison remains family-owned and independent. Renowned for its dry, precise and balanced style, Trimbach has been the number one producer of still wines from Alsace in the United States since 1978. The estate obtained Organic Agriculture certification for its entire vineyard in 2023.

The vineyard

The Gewurztraminer 2019 comes from plots located on the Ribeauvillé fault line in Alsace, an exceptional geological terroir formed fifty million years ago. The soils are composed of limestone and marl, particularly well suited to the aromatic expression of Gewurztraminer. The semi-continental climate, sheltered by the Vosges mountains, provides ideal conditions with low rainfall and generous sunshine. The vines benefit from south to south-southeast exposures on the hillsides, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage benefited from favorable weather conditions that allowed the grapes to reach full maturity. The harvest was carried out at optimal ripeness, ensuring the aromatic concentration and balance characteristic of this vintage.

Winemaking and aging

The Gewurztraminer 2019 is vinified according to the house's traditional method. After gentle pneumatic pressing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation is carried out in order to preserve the aromatic freshness and natural acidity of the wine. Aging on fine lees for several months precedes cross-flow filtration before bottling.

Grape variety

100% Gewurztraminer.
