Description
The estate
Neighboring the vineyards of Chateau d'Yquem, Chateau Suduiraut is a 17th century estate whose gardens were once designed by André Le Nôtre. Chateau Suduiraut is a classified 1855 Sauternes Premier Cru and has been owned by the AXA Millésimes group since 1992. The elaboration of the estate’s famous golden wines is the result of a strict and very precise plot selection. With a signature style that has only increased in value over the years, this fresh, light and flavorsome expression appeals to lovers of both sweet and dry fine white wines.
The vineyard
Situated in the heart of Sauternes, Chateau Suduiraut watches over a vast vineyard which spreads over 91 hectares of vines, that bear the High Environmental Value (HVE) certificate. The soil is composed of sandy-clay gravel which retains the sun’s heat and thus allows the grapes to attain a superb level of ripeness. It is indeed this precious terroir that leads to opulent Chateau Suduiraut wines.
In order to produce this dry white wine, Lions de Suduiraut 2021, the estate has cultivated a plot of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc vines that are 20 years old on average and rest on fine sandy gravel.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage began with a mild, rainy winter followed by a relatively warm spring at the end of March but very cold temperatures in April. The sub-zero temperatures led to frosts, which caused some damage to the vineyards. May and June were very rainy, but fortunately July and August proved to be rather dry. The weather conditions at the end of August and beginning of September indicated a return to normality, enabling the grapes the complete and perfect their ripening process.
Vinification and aging
Lions de Suduiraut 2021 was aged 50% in tanks and 50% in barrels, 25% of which were new, for 6 months.
The blend
Semillon (52%) and Sauvignon Blanc (48%).
