Description
The typicality of a red Pessac-Léognan second wine
The estate
Established in the Pessac-Léognan appellation since the 13th century, Château Pape Clément is an iconic Cru Classé and one of the greatest fine wines of Bordeaux. The Clémentin de Pape Clément Red is the second red wine of the estate.
The vineyard
Château Pape Clément produces Pessac-Léognan wines from a 61-hectare vineyard. The vines are 28 years old on average and are planted on Pyrenean clay gravel soils. The vineyard is managed on a micro-plot basis. The Château Pape Clément estate is certified for High Environmental Value 3, SME and even holds a Bee-Friendly certification.
The vintage
A warm, wet winter gave way to a cool, rainy spring marked by frost. The summer is cool and humid.
Vinification and ageing
First sorting in the vineyard before a second manual sorting of the bunches and then optical sorting of the grapes. The berries were placed into wooden and stainless steel vats of 25 to 70 hl by gravity. Pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature. Maceration for 28 days. Direct run-off into barrels and vats. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in one wine barrel (3/4) and in vats (1/4), as is the ageing period.
The blend
Clémentin de Pape Clément 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (54%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
