A Volnay 1er Cru from Coche-Dury, built on finesse and structure
The Estate
Domaine Coche-Dury has carried this name since 1975, following the marriage of Jean-François Coche and Odile Dury, which united two winegrowing families from Meursault, in Burgundy. Today led by Raphaël Coche, the estate spans roughly nine to ten hectares across several villages of the Côte de Beaune. Known for its meticulous, parcel-by-parcel approach and its reliance on old, non-clonal vines, Coche-Dury is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne.
The Vineyard
This cuvée results from a blend of five Premier Cru climats within Volnay, an appellation of the Côte de Beaune celebrated for pinot noir of remarkable aromatic finesse. The parcels involved — Le Village, Frémiets, Taillepieds, En Caillerets Dessus and Carelle sous Chapelle — lie on clay-limestone slopes between Pommard and Meursault, each lending its own character to the final blend, from the lifted, aerial quality of Taillepieds to the refined texture contributed by Carelle sous Chapelle and Caillerets.
The Vintage
For 2018, this cuvée was produced in very limited quantity, with only three to five barrels vinified in total, three of which were acquired by Domaine Coche-Dury at the Hospices de Beaune auction. The vines involved were tended according to organic principles, as the conditions of that year allowed for a sustainable approach free of chemical inputs.
Winemaking and aging
The Volnay 1er Cru "Hospices de Beaune Cuvée Général Muteau" 2018 is fermented in oak barrels and left on its lees longer than usual, which slows oxidation and preserves a fresh, precise texture. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, partly new, for 15 to 22 months before being bottled without filtration, a choice intended to support its aging potential and depth of flavor.
Grape Varieties
100 % pinot noir.
