Description
An Exceptional Premier Grand Cru Classé on the Limestone Plateau of Saint-Émilion
The property
Clos Fourtet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux, is a historic estate located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. Founded on an ancient medieval fort, it spans 22 hectares of clay-limestone soils. Since 2001, the Cuvelier family, with Matthieu Cuvelier at its head, has modernized the estate while preserving its heritage. The vineyard, dominated by Merlot, benefits from a unique aging process in underground quarries.
The vineyard
Located on the highest slopes of the Western plateau of Saint-Émilion, at the foot of the "Grandes Murailles", the Clos Fourtet vineyard spans 22 hectares resting on clay-limestone soils. The vines, averaging 35 years old, draw from this terroir all the mineral richness that makes the signature of the property's wines.
Vinification and aging
Densimetric then manual selection of the grapes, followed by a gravity reception. The natural fermentation takes place in whole berries in 25 small capacity thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. The extraction is carried out gently by manual punching down, with a maceration of 21 to 28 days. The malolactic fermentation takes place in the vat. The aging, lasting 14 to 18 months, takes place in an underground cellar with 40% new barrels, 58% barrels of one wine and 2% in jar.
Blend
This Clos Fourtet 2024 is the result of a blend of 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon.
