Decanter

From 7ha of vines. There is a clear freshness and vivacity to the fruit, although it leans a little too much to the savoury side of the spectrum, with redcurrant and fresh herbs playing against richer cherry and damson. There’s a lot to like here, with juiciness through the mid-palate, but it finishes short. Aged in 30% new oak.

Kunz barrel sample 18: upfront, sweet bouquet, red cassis. Slim, light palate with an angular structure, light fruit, bitter finish. Can still improve.

Vertdevin

The nose is fruity, racy, and offers fine minerality as well as elegance. It reveals notes of wild blackberry, blackcurrant, and racy minerality, combined with small touches of strawberry, cardamom, Cubeb pepper, and sweet spices, along with a very discreet hint of flowers (lilac, lily). The palate is fruity, balanced, racy, very finely tight, and offers good definition, a fine mineral thread, subtle smoothness, a touch of freshness, good structure, and a slight tension. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry, crushed blackcurrant, and small notes of fleshy/crushed redcurrant, combined with small touches of racy minerality, chocolate, spices, and a very discreet hint of flowers (lilac, lily).

89–91. Barrel Sample. This is a dense, serious wine with concentrated tannins, very much in the old style of Saint-Estèphe. It needs time for the fruit to balance with those tannins and produce a rich, structured wine. Drink from 2024.

Description

The Classic Elegance of a Great Saint-Estephe

Located in the heart of the Saint-Estephe appellation, Chateau Segur de Cabanac extends over a vineyard with an exceptional terroir, located near the magnificent Gironde estuary. Property of Domaines Delon, Segur de Cabanac is masterfully managed by Guy Delon who works with passion and dedication to preserve the typically Medocain identity of this estate. The wines of the property are characterized by the charming style of great wines from the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.

True to the saying that "the greatest terroirs look toward the water", Segur de Cabanac was protected by the thermo-regulating estuary from the periods of frost that hit the vineyards of Bordeaux at the end of April 2017. The vegetative cycle of the vine was therefore allowed to continue under ideal climatic conditions and an early harvest testified to the excellent quality of the 2017 vintage.

A 2017 vintage that emphasizes the freshness, the aromatic intensity and the beautifully dense texture of this charming and complex Saint-Estephe.
