Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Rieussec 2022
Tasting Notes
Nose
Powerful aromas of dried apricots and candied fruits mingle with the delicacy of acacia blossom and honeysuckle.
Palate
The attack is well-balanced, combining richness, intensity, and freshness. Notes of exotic fruits and spicy nuances bring beautiful complexity, extended by a gentle bitterness on the finish that hints at significant aging potential.
The Complexity and Precision of a Sauternes Wine
The Estate
Owned by Domaines de Barons Rothschild Lafite since 1984, Château Rieussec has ranked among the Premiers Crus Classés of Sauternes since 1855. The château is renowned for the quality of its sweet wines, which boast beautiful texture, combining freshness and power, and which reveal their full splendor with age. For the estate, respect for the environment is a core element of its philosophy. The harvest is therefore carried out by hand, allowing the finest fruit from the vineyard to be picked almost grape by grape and to express itself in wines of remarkable authenticity.
The Vineyard
Château Rieussec is a Sauternes wine produced from an 85-hectare vineyard located at the heart of the appellation, on sandy-clay gravel soils. Here, the Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grape varieties ripen slowly until reaching an exceptional level of maturity, giving rise to the noble rot for which the appellation is so celebrated.
The Vintage
The start of the growing cycle was delayed by two weeks due to cool weather, followed by frosts in April that spared the most sensitive areas thanks to late pruning. Dry, sunny conditions then allowed the vines to make up for this delay, leading to an early harvest for the dry white wines and a later one for the sweet wines. Botrytis developed gradually, yielding grapes of great purity despite low yields, with a final selection taking place in late October.
Winemaking and Aging
Hand-harvested in small crates. Pressed and, after settling, transferred into barrels (new barrels for the Sémillon, once-used barrels for the Sauvignon) for fermentation. Pressing and winemaking are carried out plot by plot. After fermentation, the wines are kept on the lees until mid-December, with regular lees stirring. They are then racked and blended before being returned to barrels for aging of approximately 18 months.
Blend
Sémillon (91%)
Sauvignon Blanc (9%).
