Slightly sweet and sour with a certain sweetness on the mid palate but also lively acidity. Dry and chalky on the finish, expressive of the limestone terroir. (JL)

The 2023 Lilian Ladouys was a wine that never quite clicked for me out of barrel. Now in bottle, it has a relatively light, tertiary bouquet with mainly black fruit, with a touch of sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, moderate depth, a little loose-knit toward the finish. Early drinking.

Chocolate, flowers, spice, and blackberries crowd into the perfume. The palate is even better with its medium-bodied, fresh, soft, juicy layers of fruit that taste and feel great. Give it a bit of time in the bottle, and enjoy it for 15 years after that. This is one of the best deals in Left Bank Bordeaux today! The wine blends 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2028-2042.

Juicy black fruits, concentrated without being overdone, well-judged in its balance and drinkability, with plenty of firm St Estèphe tannic architecture and a liquorice root signoff. 400L barrels for ageing, 30% new oak. Previously a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, but they have now stepped back from the ranking. Last year of organic conversion, to be certified in 2024, with an impressive 50 hl/ha yield. Give it three or four years after bottling to fully soften.

Fragrant and scented on the nose, bright red fruits and some red floral notes with cool herbal markers too. Fresh and forward with crunchy and bright cranberries and creamy raspberries. A little lean and straight at this point but lots of mineral markers on the palate – wet stone, graphite, liquorice. Very saline, this ends clean and precise, balanced and all in one line. I like the easy approachability with some classicism and terroir touches. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 55hl/ha yield. Ageing 33% new oak. 3.81pH.

The generosity and delicacy of a Saint-Estèphe wine

The property

The origins of the Château Lilian Ladouys date back to 1564, when the property was the fiefdom of Jacques de Bercoyan, lord of Lafite. The estate entered a new chapter in its history following its purchase by the Lorenzetti family in 2008. Since 2018, Manon Lorenzetti has been at the helm of Château Lilian Ladouys, infusing it with a dynamic energy that radiates throughout the Saint-Estèphe appellation. In 2019, the winery underwent an expansion and renovation signed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Following the new classification established in 2020, Château Lilian Ladouys was awarded Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status.

The vineyard

Château Lilian Ladouys 2023 is a Saint-Estèphe wine made from 80 hectares of vines resting on clayey gravel typical of the appellation. The vineyard has been HVE level 3 (High Environmental Value) certified since 2018 and has been converting to Organic Agriculture since 2020.

The vintage

The beginning of the year is marked in spring by significant mildew pressure combined with unstable and stormy weather. The rigor of the teams allows to maintain the health of the vineyard. The warm and sunny conditions at the end of summer ensure progressive maturations until the harvest, the longest in the history of the property (16 days), revealing grapes of great quality and rare balance.
