Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Léoville Poyferré 2013
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a deep, saturated ruby-red color with purple hints and a striking visual density.
Nose
Remarkably pure, the nose exudes intense aromas of black fruit such as blackcurrant and blackberry, intertwined with indulgent notes of crème de cassis and wild strawberry. With aeration, subtle oak-derived touches of vanilla, sweet spices and toast emerge, complemented by nuances of blond tobacco and smoke.
Palate
The smooth, velvety attack gives way to a medium- to full-bodied palate, supported by ripe, well-coated tannins. Lively acidity brings energy to the whole, stretching into a long, persistent finish with hints of black fruit and smoky notes.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as prime rib or a rack of lamb. It is also an excellent match for game dishes, fine poultry and pressed cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
Château Léoville Poyferré 2013 offers fine aging potential and can be enjoyed until around 2030.
The opulence and precision of a great Saint-Julien wine
The estate
Founded in 1840 following the division of a vast historic estate, Château Léoville Poyferré stands among the essential names of Bordeaux, France. Ranked Second Cru Classé in 1855, this 80-hectare jewel has belonged to the Cuvelier family since 1920. Now run by Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier, the estate masterfully combines family continuity with technical modernization. Thanks to high-precision viticulture and deep respect for the environment, it produces wines that marry power, velvety texture and purity, asserting a unique identity within its appellation.
The vineyard
The vineyard dedicated to the grand vin covers 60 hectares in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, are planted on terraces of deep gravel over a sandy-clay subsoil. This exceptional terroir, farmed at a high planting density and certified High Environmental Value (HVE 3), benefits from the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary, which encourages optimal ripening of the grapes.
The vintage
2013 was marked by challenging weather conditions. A cool, wet spring led to late flowering. However, a particularly hot and sunny July allowed the berries to catch up on their delayed development. The harvest, staggered throughout October, required rigorous selection to retain only the healthiest and most balanced fruit.
Winemaking and aging
The hand-picked grapes undergo meticulous sorting, including optical sorting, before being vinified plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After a cold pre-fermentation maceration, malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. Château Léoville Poyferré 2013 is then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, the vast majority of them new.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (26%), Petit Verdot (6%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).
