Vinum

Noticeably riper-fruited than other wines of the appellation, still somewhat marked by oak, yet offering good aromatic complexity; on the palate, medium to full-bodied, as usual well-structured, with a certain opulence without feeling heavy; red-fruited finish, good aromatic persistence.

Decanter

Blackcurrants, milk chocolate, raspberry and red cherry. Sleek and smooth, instantly silky and just so welcoming on the palate. This has concentration but with an almost sweet acidity, pure fruit and powdery tannins. It’s certainly not lacking in power, with a generous mouthfeel that’s really balanced between push, fun, fruitiness, acidity and tannins. A great Poyferré and success for the vintage. It doesn't shout, but it’s super enjoyable. Classy and chewy and fleshy while still having elegance. I love this. One of the few estates to use reverse osmosis to keep concentration. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 80% new oak. 3.71 pH. Tasted three times.

Cherry pipe tobacco, leafy herbs, flowers, peppery spices, and red fruits create the core of the wine here. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh, bright, and zesty, with elegance and refinement to the textural profile, finishing with lifted red fruits, orange zest, and just a hint of white pepper on the classically styled backend. The oak already feels well integrated into the wine. The wine blends 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13% ABV. Yields were only 26 hectoliters per hectare. Harvesting took place September 24 - October 10. Drink from 2028-2047. 92-94 pts

Vertdevin

(64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot) The nose is elegant, straightforward, racy, well-crafted and offers depth, aromatic intensity, elegant dark nuances, a finely chiseled profile, a harmonious grain, lovely definition and minerality. Beautifully racy! It reveals notes of wild blackcurrant, concentrated small black berries and, more subtly, herbal infusion, combined with touches of dense/quite ripe small red berries, hints of cornflower, Bourbon vanilla and a touch of sweet tobacco, a delicate hint of cubeb pepper, graphene, toasted hazelnut and a discreet touch of elegantly roasted fruit. The palate is beautifully delicate, fresh, mineral, all in subtlety, offering delicacy within its depth/intensity, elegant darkness, an airy quality, lovely tangy complexity/multi-layered character, a pleasing graphene-like edge, and a beautiful silky, delicate, textured touch. Finesse and freshness within its smoothness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of violet, cocoa tones and, more lightly, elegantly roasted small red fruits, combined with touches of cornflower, tangy cherry, shiny small black fruits, hints of chocolate, Bourbon vanilla and a touch of cornflower.

Description

The refinement and texture of an exceptional Saint-Julien wine

The estate

Founded in 1640, Château Léoville Poyferré is an essential estate of Saint-Julien. Spanning 80 hectares, it has belonged to the Cuvelier family since 1920, and has been managed by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier since 2018. Classified Second Grand Cru in 1855, it stands out for its exceptional terroir and its environmental commitment, certified HVE 3 since 2017.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré covers 80 hectares in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of 44 years, are planted on Mindel gravel terraces over a clay-sand subsoil.

Winemaking and ageing

Hand-harvested in crates, the grapes are rigorously sorted to retain only berries of optimal quality. Parcel-based winemaking is carried out in temperature-controlled conical stainless steel vats. Parcel selection, cold pre-fermentation maceration before alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts, then malolactic fermentation in new barrels. Ageing, lasting 18 to 20 months, is carried out in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% one-wine barrels).

Blend

The blend of Château Léoville Poyferré 2024 comprises 64 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 % Merlot, 8 % Cabernet Franc and 1 % Petit Verdot.
