Jane Anson

Jane Anson

Ruby-plum colour with attractive red-ruby highlights, stewed plum and apple aromatics; the palate feels compressed, dominated by grilled coffee bean notes.

Le Figaro Vin

Score: 88–90. Stewed raspberries, elegant oak, and hints of peony make for a very classic yet effective nose. The palate is fresher, with a rather pleasant grainy texture. Not very broad or intense, but refined.

Description

A fresh and delicate red wine from Pomerol

The estate

Starting in 1938, Louis Rapin acquired vineyards in the Montagne Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion appellations, including Château La Tour Figeac. Following the acquisition of several additional plots of vines in 1961, Louis Rapin renamed the entire estate Château La Rose Figeac. This Pomerol estate, located on the right bank of Bordeaux, has been run by Nathalie Despagne since 2013. From the moment she arrived, Nathalie Despagne undertook extensive work to help Château La Rose Figeac shine within the Pomerol appellation.

The vineyard

Château La Rose Figeac 2023 is a Pomerol wine crafted from a 4.56-hectare vineyard, of which 4.42 hectares are in production, located in the southeast of Pomerol on sandy-gravelly soils typical of the appellation. Through ploughing, cover cropping, and green harvesting, the vines—averaging 40 years old—are farmed organically and have been Ecocert certified since 2009.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, with sorting carried out both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is done plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is followed by inerting with carbon dioxide. Indigenous yeasts are selected from the best plots. Pumping over, punching down, and delestage are alternated over an extended period. Maceration lasts 2 to 4 weeks, after which the wine is drawn off for malolactic fermentation, carried out partly in barrels and, for 3 hectoliters, in amphorae. Aging takes place in barrels (55% new, 40% one-wine barrels) and in amphorae (5%).

Blend

Château La Rose Figeac 2023 is a blend of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%).
