Decanter

This exceptional 2016 is even better than the 2015. It's still full of brushed damson and black cherry fruits, with a seductive quality to the tannins that you look for in Pomerol, but it lets a little more light in and feels like the acidity is a touch higher — and it's all the better for it. A gorgeous wine.

From a tiny vineyard and made with consulting advice from talented consultant Claude Gros, the 2016 Château La Connivence is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc raised all in new oak, although you’d never know it by tasting it. Classic Pomerol notes of ripe red and black fruits, damp earth, leafy herbs, and some exotic floral characteristics all flow to a beautifully polished, elegant, medium to full-bodied effort that’s upfront and already showing the goods. I love its balance and I suspect it’s going to drink nicely for another 15 years or more.

With its floral nuances, the nose is enticing, and the palate feels like a caress thanks to its silky texture. Pomerol with a charm that is already highly expressive.

Description

The elegance and richness of a great Pomerol wine

The property

The story of the Château La Connivence is above all a story of friendship with three wine-loving friends who decide to create a very good wine. The superb Pomerol appellation then becomes the cradle of this connivance that unites the three owners: Johan Micoud, former international football player, Matthieu Chalmé, former player of the Girondins de Bordeaux and Alexandre de Malet Roquefort, owner of the Château La Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

A garden vineyard, Château La Connivence is a real little gem: 1.40 hectares located on a very large terroir of Pomerol, emblematic land of merlot, the flagship grape variety that covers 65% of the estate's land. The château has also chosen to plant cabernet franc, which represents 35% of the vineyard. On this gravel terroir combining fat gravels, fine gravels and clayey sandy soils, the three friends immediately sense that the perfect conditions are in place to be able to produce a very great Pomerol wine. In order to preserve this precious terroir, the vines are exclusively worked by hand and managed using sustainable agriculture.

The vintage

The 2016 vintage was marked by a rainy spring followed by a dry summer, but optimal conditions in September allowed to overcome the climatic challenges. Thanks to careful work by the teams, the harvest was able to take place at the optimal date, allowing perfect maturation of the tannins.

Vinification and aging

Vinification in small stainless steel vats of a truncated shape within a new cellar. Aging from 12 to 18 months in 100% new barrels.

Blend

Merlot (65%)
Cabernet franc (35%).
