Truly an « enfant terrible », 2018 turned out to be one of the most beautiful vintages at the Chateau L’Evangile, an emblematic reference of the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux.
The first half of 2018 was subject to very heavy rain, which caused a strong mildew pressure between May and July, even on the vineyard of Chateau L’Evangile. It was not until mid-July that the summer arrived, bringing high temperatures and causing great hydraulic stress for the vines. The old vines planted on the great terroirs of Chateau L'Evangile did very well. Finally, the month of September saw beautiful days and great thermal amplitudes, allowing for a calm harvest. The harvest began on September 19 with Merlot, followed by Cabernet Franc from September 25 to end on October 2.
A magnificent expression of the Pomerol terroir, the Chateau L'Evangile 2018 rewarded all the efforts of the estate’s technical teams, who worked endlessly to allow the vine to express itself fully.
A blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), the Chateau L'Evangile 2018 expresses all the typicality of each variety in a wine of exceptional quality. A great vintage of Chateau L'Evangile, marking 150 years of viticulture at the Domaines Barons de Rothschild.
The 2018 L'Evangile is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot was harvested September 19 to October 2, and the Cabernet Franc was harvested September 25 to October 1. This is the optimal blend--with more Cabernet Franc coming through this year, since it was amazing. Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips seductively out of the glass with glamorous notes of baked black cherries, warm blueberries and raspberry tart plus wafts of kirsch, red roses, rose hip tea, espresso, licorice and sandalwood. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and delivering opulent black fruit layers, the palate has a firm frame of lovely, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Beautiful.
