Decanter

Open and alive, not crisp but not creamy, tangy but not too sharp, this has a good drive of fresh acidities and bright raspberry and cranberry fruit. Lean and straight, it's all in one line, not dense but carries some weight and character in the purity of the fruit. I love the initial juiciness that then turns too salty, minerality on the finish. Well made, if missing a bit more of a bridge between the initial start and finish which will happen over the next few years. A good effort.

James Suckling

Fruity red with notes of cherries, dark plums, roasted strawberries and walnuts. Creamy and elegant, with a medium body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Delicious now, but can hold too.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2021 Joanin Bécot has an airy and well-defined bouquet with black cherries, bergamot and light cedar aromas. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is well-balanced with thick tannins and impressive fruit concentration, retaining ample delineation and freshness on a plush and satisfying finish. What a lovely 2021 Right Bank.

Blending 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc produced a forward, soft, vibrant, fresh expression of cherries, plums, flowers, and wet earth, with a touch of salinity on the nose and palate. The medium-bodied palate leaves you with sweet, vibrant plums, chocolate, and ripe cherries on the back end. This is already delicious, so you can open it with pleasure on release. Drink from 2024–2034.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Joanin Becot has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It waltzes out with showy scents of Morello cherries and raspberry coulis, plus hints of clove oil and fragrant soil. The medium-bodied palate is chewy, with a good amount of fruit and a savory finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A rich, ripe and opulent bouquet that’s sure to win over your guests. Both juicy and fresh, it makes you want to dive into the glass. Silky, elegant and confident on the palate, carried by gentle, fresh notes. A wine that’s a real pleasure to drink, with a certain seriousness on the finish.

Yves Beck

Refreshing chalky and fruity nuances with aromas of blackberries and mint. Fresh and slender, the wine shows a tonic, mouthwatering character. It is well supported by its tannins and a juicy acidity. A sapid, slightly saline wine that can certainly be enjoyed young, yet also shows good ageing potential.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, deep colour. Intense nose with pure fruit. Precise on the attack, caressing mid-palate, very flavoursome; the wine develops juicy and fresh, with an unprecedented brightness of flavour. This is very good and quite different from the past. Blend: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol: 13.5% – pH: 3.50. Yield: 45 hl/ha. Unchaptalised wine. Harvest from 6 to 8 October.

Description

A Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wine with an alluring finesse and balance

The estate

With a great location in the town of Saint-Philippe d'Aiguilhe, Château Joanin Bécot is one of the most beautiful references of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Château Joanin Bécot watches over an almost 15-hectare terroir. Planted on a large clay-limestone terroir with asterias, the old vines are 40 years old on average and produce fine Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wines.

Vinification and ageing

Manual harvest with 3 stages of sorting (2 sortings before destemming, 1 after). Vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Parcel selection, manual punching of the cap. Vatting for around 40 days. Malolactic fermentation in vats. Aged in barrels (50% new, 10% second-fill barrels), vats (19%), amphorae (15%) and tuns (6%).

The blend

Château Joanin Bécot 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%).
