Description
A seductively fresh and elegant Pauillac red wine
The estate
The Liberal family has owned Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal since the beginning of the 18th century. Over time, these fine connoisseurs have brought together the best terroirs of Pauillac. Today, this Pauillac Classified Growth is owned by the Villars family, who acquired it in 1983 and revived in Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal the luster of yesteryear. The family has invested in new winemaking equipment and has converted the cultivation of the vineyard to sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal 2021 is a Pauillac wine that stems from a 30-hectare vineyard. The vines are planted on Günzian gravel upon a clay-limestone subsoil. Certified in organic farming since 2019, Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal is in the process of converting to biodynamic farming.
The vintage
Frost, run-off and cool temperatures during the spring and summer seasons preceded a strong mildew pressure which affected almost half the vineyard. Despite low yields, the grapes harvested showcased a high quality.
Vinification and aging
The vinification is carried out in a plot-by-plot manner and is accompanied by pumping over and vertical pressing. Maceration for 24 days. The wine is aged for 16 months, 40% in new barrels, 40% in second-fill barrels and 20% in amphorae.
The blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (90%)
Merlot (10%)
