Description
A Non-Vintage Sauternes exuding a great freshness and finesse
The estate
Over the past 400 years, Château d’Yquem has cultivated a prestigious reputation, crowned in 1855 when it achieved the esteemed rank of Premier Cru Classé Supérieur. This designation, awarded during the official classification commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for the Universal Exhibition in Paris, remains unmatched—making Yquem the only estate to reach such heights and one of the world’s most iconic producers of fine wine.
The vineyard
Château d'Yquem spans approximately 100 hectares in production, with 75% planted to Sémillon and 25% to Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyard benefits from the Ciron, a tributary of the Garonne River that creates an exceptional microclimate essential for Sauternes wines. Autumnal morning mists from the Ciron foster the development of noble rot, or Botrytis Cinerea, just before harvest. The estate’s acclaimed reputation is also the result of meticulous expertise and the highest standards upheld by its dedicated team. With extremely low yields, Château d'Yquem produces Sauternes wines of great rarity and prestige.
The case
For its Grand Vin, Château d'Yquem conducts a rigorous selection process, reserving only the most exquisite and elegant lots. Other lots, despite their high quality, are set aside. Since 2014, Château d'Yquem has used some of these lots to craft a non-vintage Sauternes, which was initially reserved for the estate team. The Sauternes de Château d'Yquem is made to be consistent and balanced, with six editions produced so far. Château d'Yquem now offers a unique case to discover these six editions.
The blend
Each Sauternes de Château d'Yquem edition is a blend of multiple vintages, with proportions of subsequent vintages gradually added to form the base vintage. The Sauternes 6 de Château d'Yquem edition comprises a selection of four vintages from 2014 to 2019, bottled in 2020.
The tasting
Each cuvée of Sauternes de Château d’Yquem is blended from several vintages, showcasing youthful aromas of fresh fruit—particularly citrus—as well as the candied notes characteristic of noble rot wines. On the palate, this harmony of lively freshness and dense richness is unmistakable. With age, the cuvées reveal aromas of plum and orange marmalade, with the freshness preserved by a zesty bitterness that perfectly balances the sweetness. As these cuvées mature further, their candied, spicy, and zesty flavors become even more pronounced on the palate.
