Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This offers an alluring swath of tobacco and warm humus at first, slowly yielding to dark plum and currant preserve flavors that flow through the finish, revealing a kiss of juniper at the end. Best from 2021 through 2028. 4,167 cases made.

Decanter

A pumped-up frame, confident but austere, with strong clove notes on the nose. Here the oak is dominating and really closing in around the fruit—just a bit too tight to let the fruit expression out.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2017 Carlmagnus has a very intense, rather glossy bouquet with precocious dark cherry and crème de cassis aromas that somewhat overshadow the expression of terroir. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins. A fine thread of acidity leads to a dense and, sadly, rather monotone finish.

Bettane+Desseauve

Juicy tannins on the attack, then drying on the finish. To reassess at the end of ageing.

/100

Le Figaro Vin

Sappy, full-bodied, fruity, with a taut, fleshy palate, supple tannins, and a long finish.

89

/100

Yves Beck

Delicate, inviting bouquet with notes of cocoa powder and blackberries. On the palate, the wine is juicy, moreish, and balanced. The tannins are well integrated and the structure is refreshing. A sapid, fresh wine.

Description

A delicious and fruity Fronsac from an excellent vintage

With its iconic name echoing its imperial past, Chateau CarlMagnus is one of the most beautiful references in the Fronsac appellation, east of the Bordeaux region.

The estate, belonging to the French artist and former fencing champion Arnaud Roux-Oulie, was indeed visited by the Emperor Charlemagne. In a vineyard covering an area of 10 hectares, planted in clay-limestone soil, Arnaud Roux-Oulie pursues his ambition to produce great wines that reflect the identity of their exceptional terroir.

A tribute to the flagship red grape of the Right Bank, the Chateau CarlMagnus 2017 is a 100% Merlot. From a vintage referred to as a "winemaker’s vintage", the Chateau CarlMagnus 2017 highlights all the hard work and attention invested into this vintage.

To respect the character of the fruit, the grapes are picked when they reach their optimum maturity, and not a day before or after. Without first being crushed, the grapes are rigorously selected and placed in wooden vats. The vinifications are highly technical, featuring a slow maceration for a gentle extraction, allowing for elegant and distinguished tannins. A beautiful Fronsac from a vintage that was particularly flattering for the appellation.
