Description
The refinement and complexity of an iconic Chilean wine
The estate
Located in Aconcagua Valley to the north of Santiago, Chile, Sena is an iconic grand cru from South America.
This exceptional wine is the fruit of a collaboration which began in 1995 between Eduardo Chadwick, one of the most emblematic ambassadors of Chilean wines, and the American Robert Mondavi, who is renowned as one of the greatest pioneers of New World wines.
Now exclusively produced by the Chadwick family, Sena is a refined, elegant and balanced expression of the most beautiful Chilean terroirs.
The vineyard
Following 4 years of searching for the most beautiful terroir, Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi acquired 350 hectares of untouched lands at the heart of the magnificent Aconcagua Valley in the north of Santiago, 40 hectares of which are now planted with a mosaic of Bordeaux grape varieties as well as Carmenere, the flagship grape variety for Chilean wines. The Sena vineyard is operated according to the principles of biodynamic farming.
The wine
2019 was Sena’s 25th vintage. A special label has been adorned on the Sena 2019 bottle for this occasion.
The vintage
A mild and dry winter preceded a warm spring which encouraged the onset of the crop cycle, followed by a relatively cool summer. While this vintage was considered hot for Chile, the Sena vineyard enjoyed a cooler than average climate due to its proximity to the sea, whih conferred a delicious, fruity intensity as well as a lively acidity. The harvests, which began on 15 March, gave rise to a structured, elegant and aromatic wine, with tannins that mixed with great length, a sign of a very significant aging potential.
Winemaking and aging
Sena 2019 enjoys a 22-month aging in new French oak barrels (80%) and in tuns.
Blend
Sena 2019 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Malbec (21%), Carmenere (15%) and Petit Verdot (4%).
