Description
A prestigious second wine from Saint-Julien from an exceptional terroir
The estate
Founded in 1725 by Joseph Stanislas Gruaud, the Château Gruaud Larose, located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle in the Médoc, spans 82 hectares. The estate, now managed by Jean Merlaut, is renowned for its exceptional terroir composed of Garonne gravels and its favorable microclimate. The motto "the king of wines, the wine of kings" embodies the prestigious heritage of the estate, classified as Second Grand Cru in 1855. The vineyard combines tradition and modernity, with meticulous vinification and a blend dominated by cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Bordeaux is at the heart of its identity.
The vineyard
The 82-hectare vineyard is located in a single block within the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of 49 years, are planted on a terroir of Garonne gravels dating from the Quaternary period. This characteristic soil of the appellation gives the wine its structure and finesse.
The wine
The Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the second wine of the estate.
The vintage
The year 2024 was marked by cooler than normal temperatures from mid-April, slowing the vegetative development of the vine. Significant rainfall in September delayed the ripening of the grapes. Patience was essential to achieve optimal maturity, with the harvest finally beginning on September 27.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvesting for 12 days, with four levels of sorting including an optical sort. Parcel and intraparcel vinification took place in small vats (55hl to 130hl), 75% of which were in cement and temperature-controlled. Fermentation took place between 24°C and 28°C with carefully selected yeasts for optimal extraction of polyphenols. Aging continued for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Blend
This Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2024 is the result of a blend of 48% cabernet sauvignon, 46% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, and 3% petit verdot.
