The Roussillon vineyard extends, as part of the Languedoc province, over more than 20,000 hectares of land from the Massif des Corbières to Banyuls, not far from the Spanish border. Although the Greeks are said to have planted the first vines around the 5th century BC, it was during the Roman era that the production of Roussillon wines took off.
Situated between the sea and the mountains of the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Roussillon wine-growing area draws its uniqueness from the diversity of its soils (composed of limestone, schist and clay), its terraced vines and its Mediterranean climate.
With mild winters, low rainfall, optimal sunshine, natural temperature regulations by the Tramontane, the famous fresh wind, this arid region, which is among the hottest in France, benefits from conditions that are favourable to the production of wines that authentically express the identity of their terroir.
Red, rosé, white or even natural sweet wines, the wines of Roussillon notably comprise Syrah, Mouvèdre and Carignan grapes.
Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, IGP Côtes Catalanes or IGP Pyrénées-Orientales... These are examples of appellations where, for several years now, passionate winegrowers, who are renowned for their talent both in the management of the vineyard and in the vinification of the wines, such as Hervé Bizeul (Domaine du Clos des Fées), Gérard and Lionel Gauby or Domaine Olivier Pithon, have been producing wines whose quality and elegance enhance this exceptional Roussillon soil.
