Description
An iconic Grande Champagne Cognac stemming from a unique know-how
The house
Founded in 1724 in the Charente region by Rémy Martin, the eponymous Cognac House witnessed an international growth in 1810, under the impetus of Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, the fourth generation to head the family business. A keen astronomer, he chose a centaur as the brand's logo, in reference to his zodiac sign (Sagittarius).
Working with Paul-Émile Rémy Martin since 1910, André Renaud became the President of the house in 1924 and launched the Fine Champagne Rémy Martin VSOP cognac in 1927. This cuvée, produced exclusively by the house, is made from a blend of different crus from Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne, two out of the six crus that make up the Cognac production area.
Since 1960, illustrious figures have marked the history of Rémy Martin, such as André Giraud, André Hériard Dubreuil, Georges Clot and Pierrette Trichet, the first female Cellar Master in Cognac. Since 2014, the Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau has been perpetuating the tradition of excellence that has guided the house for nearly three centuries.
The Rémy Martin Cognac House is renowned for its unique, rich and refined cuvées.
The vineyard
In 2012, the vineyards of Domaines Rémy Martin were the first in the Charente region to bear a HEV (High Environmental Value) certificate. Since 2020, all of the company's partners are committed to sustainable viticultural practices and 50% of their vineyards are HEV certified.
The wine
Renowned for its refinement and richness, the Louis XIII cuvée is the result of a rigorous selection and blending of eaux-de-vie made from several grape varieties cultivated in Grande Champagne, a prestigious cru that makes up the Cognac production area. This area is renowned for its chalky soil and mild, temperate climate.
Created in 1874 by Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, Louis XIII is a cuvée of excellence that benefits from several years of ageing in oak barrels, mostly stemming from the forests of Limousin. For nearly 150 years, Louis XIII has been enhancing the know-how and expertise of each Cellar Master who, from one generation to another, creates a unique blend and perpetuates the unique and refined signature style.
A symbol of the French way of life and the unique know-how of several generations of Cellar Masters, this exceptional bottle is showcased in a refined box set that contains a decanter designed by the Baccarat crystal masters, whose design was inspired by a 16th-century flask found on the site of the Battle of Jarnac, along with two crystal tasting glasses created by designer Christophe Pillet.
One of the most prestigious Cognacs in the world, Louis XIII owes its uniqueness to its many eaux-de-vie, each of which testify to a particular era.
Vinification and ageing
Rémy Martin's partner winegrowers ensure that their vineyards are rigorously monitored and that the harvest is carried out at full maturity. Following pressing, the clear juices are fermented for a week. No additives are added before distillation, which takes place between November and the end of March.
The distillation of the eaux-de-vie is carried out on the lees and in two stages. The second distillation gives rise to a spirit that is 70% in volume. Out of 1,000 samples, only a dozen or so are selected, thanks to the expertise of the Cellar Master and his tasting committee, and used in the composition of the Cuvée Louis XIII.
The ageing process is carried out in tierçons, wooden barrels made from Limousin oak originally used for transporting cognac and whose porosity and unique tannins are perfectly suited to the ageing of eaux-de-vie. Each year, the selection and blending of the most high-quality eaux-de-vie by the cellar Master is a true legacy left to future generations.
