The Power and Silkiness of a Saint-Julien Second Wine
The Estate
Château Lagrange is one of the iconic references of the Saint-Julien appellation. The property boasts very ancient origins, as the site was home to a "Villa Rustica" as far back as the Gallo-Roman era. The Order of the Knights Templar later established the estate's winegrowing activity. Château Lagrange enjoyed a true golden age in the 18th century and was awarded the title of 3rd Growth (3ème Cru Classé) in the Official Classification of 1855. In 1983, Château Lagrange joined the fold of the Japanese group Suntory under its president Keizo Saji. Following a major renovation and investment program combined with the arrival of a dynamic team, Château Lagrange has risen to the summit of Médoc wines.
Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the Second Wine of Château Lagrange.
The Vineyard
Château Lagrange 2023 is a Saint-Julien wine produced from a single 118-hectare vineyard. The vineyard enjoys a superb location on two gravel rises. Oriented north-south, the vines dedicated to producing this Second Wine, averaging 30 years of age, are planted on gravelly-silty soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. The vineyard's climate is temperate and oceanic in nature.
The Vintage
While early-year rainfall helped replenish water reserves, the warm conditions that followed encouraged rapid vegetative growth. In June, high disease pressure was kept under control thanks to the teams' expertise, ahead of a mild summer. Harvesting took place under ideal weather conditions, yielding healthy grapes of exceptional quality.
Winemaking and Aging
Hand-harvested grapes, with an initial sorting followed by a second sort using optical camera technology. Plot and intra-plot selection. The 103 vine plots are vinified in 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Batches are classified according to terroir, vine age, and grape ripeness. Temperature-controlled fermentation between 26 and 28°C over a period of 18 to 25 days, with moderate daily pump-overs, rack and return, or punching down. Malolactic fermentation through co-inoculation. Aged for 13 months in barrels (20% new).
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (46%)
Merlot (41%)
Petit Verdot (13%).
