2014 Saint-Julien, Second vin du Chateau Léovile Las Cases, from Bordeaux.
The 2014 Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is a Second vin du Chateau Léoville Las Cases (started in 2007 from replanted plots in Clos Léoville Las Cases). This Second vin is 57% Merlot completed by 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The nose is scrumptious, very aromatic with a good expression of the Merlot. The rich palate offers spicy accents and a good structure. The quality tannins leave a smooth and silky sensation. The vinification and selection of the grapes were skilfully completed. This Second vin is quite dense and could be compared to a Grand vin although it lacks complexity and terroir expression. This wine is a good introduction (as with Clos du Marquis) before reaching the quintessence of the Las Cases Grand vin.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2014 Le Petit Lion retains that earthy bouquet that I remarked upon when I tasted this Deuxième Vin from barrel. Tightly wound black fruit, mixed with a hint of shucked oyster shell surfaces from the glass. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, an almost sorbet-like freshness with touches of blood orange tincturing the slightly tart, but pleasing finish. This has turned out admirably in bottle.
